Our Story
The story of Knotts Builders began before the company itself.
For more than four decades, Terry and Karla Knotts have contributed to the growth of the Charlotte area through land development and real estate. Terry was involved in the development of Ballantyne, while Karla built a longstanding career in the local real estate community.
In 2008, as the housing market was shifting, their son Michael had recently graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and was working for a national homebuilder. The family had land ready for its next chapter, and Michael had found the work he wanted to do. Knotts Builders grew from that moment.
What began with a few homes has since become more than 500 across the Charlotte region, spanning a wide range of neighborhoods, styles, and price points, including the 2026 HGTV Dream Home.
Today, Michael leads Knotts Builders while Terry and Karla continue developing the land that shapes what comes next. The company has grown, but the way we approach the work remains deeply personal: know the details, communicate clearly, make thoughtful decisions, and do what’s right even when no one is looking.
